5 (minus two) quick gems from this week
Sup friends šš¼,
Iām away this week, so thisāll be a shorter edition (3 gems for the week).
Quote Iām pondering atm:
A mark of a personās strength of character is the likelihood they give someone credit where it is due in situations where they donāt have to.
Been part of a few convos with colleagues this week where theyāve done exactly this - it makes me feel more & more grateful for the people I get to spend my time with each day.
Anyway, letās get to it š
/1 The Best Advice from 60+ Year Olds
Loved this thread (advice given from 60, 70, 80 and 90-year-olds to young people today). Filled with great advice that makes you pause and reflect.
Some of the standouts:
Donāt take things as seriously as you do
Relax, and enjoy lifeā¦but also -
Have an eye towards the future (know the life you want to live and start moving towards this)
Youāll only regret the things you didnāt do, not the things you did (note: I grapple with this one regularly - āhow do I ensure I do the things that I KNOW I wonāt regret, even if theyāre non-obvious to me right now, but will likely be off-limits as I grow olderā - probably why I started this newsletter! Alas, a monologue for another day..)
I found a guy on YouTube who asks 60, 70, 80, and 90-year-olds:
ā¢ Their biggest mistakes
ā¢ What they used to worry about
ā¢ One piece of advice for their younger selfWildly enough, they all pretty much mention the same things.
Here are my top 7:

/2 Group chats rule the world
Vigorously nodding throughout this thread - the key points:
Kinda like how comedians go to small clubs to workshop their ideas, private group chats are where most people flesh out their opinions/ideas before coming up with a more refined and polished āpublicā opinion
You need a āgardenerā - a central leader who can help shut down a conversation, pluck out the best ideas, bring in fresh energy and more
āWhat makes or breaks a party? A new idea, plus a sense of humor, makes a party ā and the bores break it.ā
I havenāt done justice to the nuanced ideas or how well-written the thread is, so I recommend checking it out for yourself.
# Group chats rule the world
Most of the interesting conversations in tech now happen in private group chats: Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal, small invite-only Discord groups.
Being part of the right group chat can feel like having a peek at the kitchen of a restaurant but insteadā¦ x.com/i/web/status/1ā¦

/3 Productivity Hacks That Work
Two a16z features in one newsletter - coming up with the goods! I canāt knock it tbh.
Honestly, if we tried to just implement 3 of these in a month, it would be a game-changer (try it and let me know the three you choose).
The top three that I use + would recommend:
calendar blocking
workout in the AM, then tough work
if it takes less than 3min, do it then
stupid productivity hacks that actually work:
- calendar blocking
- email > phone call > zoom
- remove most recurring meetings
- iphone on do not disturb 24/7
- turn off slack, social, & email notifs
- bulk review emails at set times
- bulk review SMS at end of workday
