šŸ“ Being a Better Public Speaker

5 quick gems from this week

Sup friends šŸ‘‹šŸ¼,

Weā€™ve had some ā˜€ļø in the UK recently, so Iā€™ve been trying to make the most of this.

Saying that, I usually donā€™t make the most of great weather during the weekdays, but youā€™ll be glad to know Iā€™ve been touching grass this weekend and getting that sweet Vitamin D šŸŒ¾šŸŒž

Anyway, back inside and ready to rock for the week šŸ¤˜

Letā€™s get to it šŸ™‚

Enjoyed this read from Jim Vandehei - the previous co-founder of Politico, and current CEO at Axios, a media empire.

This quote resonated:

It is nonsense that to shine, you need to go to a fancy school, bootlick bosses, or pay your dues at soul-sucking jobs working for bad people.

You do not need to get 1500 on your SAT or to have a sky-high IQ or family connections. You donā€™t even need sparkling talents.

You simply need to want to construct goodness with whatever life throws at you.

This starts by grounding yourself with unbreakable core values and then watching, learning, and copying those who do itā€”and get itā€”right.

But it also includes watching and studying those who screw it up.

You need to find your own passions, not have them imposed by others.

Then outwork everyone in pursuit of shaping your destinyā€”your own personal greatnessā€”on your terms, by your measures, at your pace.

A quick summary of useful points:

  • Pursue deep, meaningful, unconditional relationships with your kids

  • a healthy, resilient marriage

  • strong, loving relationship with my parents and siblings

  • a few deep and durable friendships

  • faith and connection beyond myself

  • and doing consequential work with people I enjoy and admire

There was also an emphasis on giving ourselves grace when we fall short.

ā€œLife is not measured by a moment. Focus on getting the big things right.ā€

/2 Donā€™t wait for the ā€˜perfectā€™ moment

Adversity and challenges donā€™t make a moment any less perfect.

We can always find a reason not to take that job, or make that big change in our lives.

We must do, because perfect moments do not exist. So we should never wait for this myth of perfection to make progress.

Dan Go always has good things to say on longevity.

Some of the key takeaways for me:

  • Remove most processed sugars and ultra-processed foods

  • Getting 8k steps per day is correlated with 40% decrease in mortality

  • Daily mobility drills + meditation

  • Being intentional in building a community of friends

  • Optimize for nutrient-dense sources of protein

/4 How Doing Free Work can Upgrade Your Life

I frickinā€™ love this thread.

Noah tells a story of how he landed a job at Mint.com by doing free work - he built the 6-month marketing strategy, without knowing a thing about marketing. The founder loved the plan, and hired him to execute on it.

He wasnā€™t asked to do this work - he decided to act in order to land his dream role.

He created a 19-slide deck and analysed Noahā€™s entire social strategy.

I love this concept and would recommend ANYONE to take this strategy if you want to get ahead, land a job, get clients and much more.

(If you want to see the deck the high-schooler created for Noah, I went through the lead magnet so you donā€™t have to - you can check it out here)

/5 Tips to Be a Better Public Speaker

Improving your public speaking skills is something everyone should spend some time on - even if you donā€™t do this often.

This thread is filled with advice and stories - some of the advice Iā€™m gonna try:

  • Raise your heart rate before the public speaking event

  • Use hand gestures and body language to dial up the charisma

  • End your speech with a clear call-to-action

My summary doesnā€™t do this thread justice, trust me just read this one in full!

Thatā€™s a wrap - let me know your favourite link šŸ™‚

Till next week,
